NUTRITION TIPS
FROM: Kristy Morrell: Registered Dietitian
- Skipping breakfast can lead to overeating later in the day.
- It’s important to plan ahead with meals and snacks so you are not tempted by less nutritious foods.
- Your body gives you the same signal for both hunger and thirst. If you are not drinking enough water you are more likely to eat unnecessarily.
- Eating often regulates mood as well as keeping your metabolism working efficiently.
- It’s important to use meal times to connect with the family without the distraction of television, phones or other interruptions.
- Stop half way through your meal to “check in” on your body to see if you are comfortably satisfied or whether you need a few more bites. Without this “check in” you are likely to eat more than you need and end up too full, causing excessive weight gain.
- Understanding portion sizes and educating yourself and your family about appropriate serving sizes is an important requirement to achieve optimal health!
- It is important to understand what particular foods you are eating and the specific foods that offer you the most satisfaction. As an adult, it is critical to role model eating at the dining table for all of your meals. Avoid eating in front of the TV or computer!
- You can eat healthfully and still keep to a budget. Watch sales and cut coupons to save money. Be a wise shopper and compare prices.
- Watch the language you use about food and your body. Kids replicate everything!! If you want your child to grow up with healthy self esteem and confidence you need to watch what is said as well as modeled in front of them!
